There is a language, little known,
Lovers claim it as their own.
Its symbols smile upon the land,
Wrought by Natures wondrous hand;
And in their silent beauty speak,
Of life and joy, to those who seek.
For love divine and sunny hours,
In the language of the flowers.

“What a splendid book, one of the most complete
I’ve read on the topic. Rhonda PallasDowney has skillfully
woven the essence of flowers into the greater picture of
herbalism, homeopathy, and color healing to create a truly
wholistic approach to wellness. . . . Eminently practical,
easy to use, and inspiring.”
— Rosemary Gladstar, author of Herbal Healing for
Women
“ For those interested in flower remedies from
an energetic medicine point of view, Rhonda PallasDowney’s
integration of herbs, homeopathy and flower essences is
superb. I know of no other source for this comprehensive
approach.”
— C. Norman Shealy, M.D., Ph.D., author of Sacred
Healing and Founding President, American Holistic Medical
Association
Many healing traditions, including aromatherapy, herbalism,
homeopathy, and Chinese medicine, use flower essences for
healing. Ancient traditions like these take into account
both the physical and psychological condition of the “patient”
and work to integrate and heal the “whole” person
— physically, mentally, and spiritually. Just as the
body has a wisdom of healing itself, each flower essence
contains a healing energy, as expressed by color and the
energies that correspond to the chakras.
In her new book, The Complete Book of Flower Essences ,
health practitioner Rhonda PallasDowney beautifully pairs
traditional flower essence healing with the relationship
to the chakras, which are also known as the energy centers
of the body. As students of the healing arts will attest,
each of the seven chakras has a color associated with it.
PallasDowney uses the colors of the flower essences to connect
them to each chakra center.
The Complete Book of Flower Essences
offers readers a hands on approach to aid in the treatment
of physical, psychological, and spiritual ailments and includes:
• Charts to easily explain the healing
properties of plants
• Extensive, in-depth botanical descriptions
that include the flower’s color, texture, essence, and
growing patterns
• Detailed guidelines for preparing
and administering “whole plant” flower essences
• Integration of the four elements,
the five senses, and the eight principle patterns of Chinese
herbal medicine
• Information on each plant’s
‘doctrine of signatures,’ or how to ‘read’
a plant to discover its usefulness for symptoms and patterns
of imbalance

Opening Our Wild Hearts to the Healing Herbs
by Gail Faith Edwards
Medicine Trees, pg. 32-33
Trees have a unique spirit. They offer us much more than
simply food, medicine, fiber, and material for making tools.
Green beings of great beauty and girth, towering trees whisper
many secrets throughout the seasons. Trees are impressive
for their steadfast and long-standing natures. Rooted in
one spot seemingly forever, they are always growing and
changing.
Throughout time, humans have looked to trees
for help in understanding their personal growth and changes.
People have always sought solace and comfort from trees, spoken
to trees of their problems and joys, and gathered strength
from these interactions with the tree spirits. A common practice
in many cultures is choosing a tree as a personal friend and
ally. Those who do this learn lessons from and grow with that
tree throughout life. Scientific studies prove trees do indeed
respond to love, to care and to pain. Ancient people knew
this, and in our wild hearts we know this too.
Living on this land we call Blessed Main Herb Farm for
more than twenty years, I‘ve come to know a few trees
on a personal level. Several trees around our home have
names given to them by my children. For instance, Big Red,
is a tall and beautiful red maple that stands sentinel along
our tree line. Jack trimmed her years ago, and, since receiving
this special attention, she has grown and branched out ten-fold.
Big Red is the tree my children climb when they want to
see forever or freak me out—I’m not sure which,
but probably both. My son Johnny says he climbs Big Red
when he’s mad or sad. She is his friend.
Another special tree on our farm is an apple
tree. About a hundred years old, she has lovingly held my
children since they were able to climb. Her sideways leaning
trunk made it easy even for the babies to straddle. She’s
cradled their infant swings, put on awesome apple blossom
displays, and, despite her age, continues to offer bountiful
harvests of small, red, tasty apples. It’s next to that
apple tree that my daughter, Grace, plans to build her house.
A cherry tree stands just outside the kitchen door. She
was a small bush when we first settled her. Tall and spreading
now, she shades the area where we cook and hang out during
summer. I meet with friends and students under this cherry
tree’s boughs, holding intimate conversations and
loving exchanges. We refer to her as the listening tree,
for she is a tireless and compassionate friend, always willing
to lend an ear.
I believe everyone has special relationships
with trees. Perhaps you have a particular tree you visit when
you’re lonesome, one you decorate for special celebrations,
or one that makes you smile as you round the corner on your
way home. Maybe there’s a tree you’ve been fond
of since childhood, or one underneath which you spread a blanket
and relax. Your favorite tree may have offered you its fruit,
its medicine, or its shade.
The Seneca believe that long ago and far way all beings gathered
together to sing the songs of Peace. The winds of the world
carried the sound around the earth for all to experience.
If you open you wild heart and listen closely, you can still
hear these ancient melodies of peace whispering through the
trees.
Come, let us talk a bit about the special healing energies
the trees offer by way of food, medicine, and spirit power.
